You may have seen advertisements for chewing gum claiming that a particular brand of gum has been “approved by dentists,” but what does that even mean? Do Dentists actually approve of chewing gum and do they endorse specific brands?
The answer is… Yes and No!
Dentists do recommend chewing gum in the following instances:
Chewing gum with xylitol can inhibit the ability of bacteria to adhere to the surface of the teeth. This prevents the bacterial build-up that contributes to plaque.
What Is the ADA Seal of Acceptance?
When a product carries The American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, it means the product has been scientifically evaluated to be safe and effective in regards to dental hygiene issues.
Products that receive the ADA Seal are frequently are asked to meet even more stringent standards than required by law. Companies cannot purchase the ADA seal of approval. The ADA seal ensures that the claims made on the label are accurate.
