Alternatives to Airport Parking
Information may not be reliable

9/20/2017
An airport parking lot, with acres of parking and insufficient security, can be expensive. Off-site parking may be a convenient and affordable alternative.

According to the Department of Transportation, almost 100 million passengers traveled through domestic airports last year. Americans love to travel, and many may use a personal vehicle to get to and from the airport. It’s not unusual for a public airport parking lot at municipal airports to encompass several acres of land, and they can include several multi-level parking structures. Using an off-site airport parking facility may help avoid the stress of navigating the complex garages, long walk to the terminals and the stress of arriving on time.

Security

Traditional airport parking security measures may combine security guards, generous lighting and security cameras. Even with 24/7 security, thieves can break into vehicles and get away unnoticed. The sheer size of the area being patrolled and monitored can hinder security’s effectiveness. Cameras may have blind spots, and the guards may take easily identified patrol patterns. Airport parking services can have smaller facilities, thwarting potential thefts as a result.

Services

Economy parking at the airport parking lot may be an inexpensive alternative to the parking available closer to the terminals, but it can also become nerve-racking. Travelers may need to build time into their schedule to arrive at the airport much earlier than usual to ensure they can find a parking spot, unload the luggage and get a shuttle to the terminal. Depending on the size of the party traveling and number of others arriving at the same time, this can require coordination, patience and hours of time. Reservations at an off-site parking lot may include valet parking, a short ride to the airport and saving the headache of dealing with large groups of irritable people jockeying for the same seats on a public shuttle.

Affordability

Airports may need to be profitable to stay in business. Checking bags, buying bottles of water or grabbing a quick snack can be very expensive as revenue streams are updated and integrated into other services to help support the bottom line. Parking facilities may be the latest additions to airport profit centers. Airport parking areas may need ongoing maintenance to maintain appropriate operating conditions. Training security personnel and upgrading security equipment can be expensive. Airports may pass that cost to customers, making it pricey to park for several days or weeks.

Off-site parking companies may not have the same security concerns, overhead and expenses of an airport parking lot. Services may be enhanced, and convenience improved. For frequent or repeat customers, online promotions and rewards programs can be offered to make the cost of parking with them even more affordable.
