Maxine and I want to remind all our feathered friends that our place is where you get spoiled. We have packed the store full of toys, bulk food, stands, cages and anything else you need. Remember our place is where you can interact with the birds, and be sure to ask about our Boarding, DNA testing and Grooming (Only on Saturday) The store's motto is customer service and if we don't have what you need we will special order it for you.
Thank you to Mrs. Paisley and her 2nd grade students of Highland Elementry School in Lake Stevens for having Apollo's friends visit for a information day on rainforest animals.
A special treat for your bird that you can make:
cup of Pelletscup of a healthy seed mixcup of dried veggies (Golden feast veggie crisp works great)cup of whole-wheat pasta (uncooked)cup unsalted sesame seed sticks (can find at Fred Myers or organic store)cup of Cheerioscup of dried blueberries (Golden feast works great)cup of dried papayacup of dried pineapple**For larger birds you can include cup of shelled or unshelled nuts***Substitute Cheerios with all-natural granola (Golden feast works
Combine all ingredients in a big bowl and then seal in an air tight container, makes about 3 cups. For a foraging idea put mix into a brown paper bag and use leather or bird safe item to tie up the bag in the cage and let the fun begin. See pictures below.
Gather pine cones where you're absolutely sure no pesticides have been sprayed or used!! Make sure they are in good condition: not wet, old, or mildewed. Wash well with soap and hot water. Rinse well. Place in a warm oven (225-250) for approximately 2 hours to dry out. Pine cones will scorch and possibly start a fire if the oven is higher than 250. After drying can give to your bird plain or add peanut butter and add your favorite seed or pellets.
Mix up your favorite bread recipe. (special tip use unsweeten applesauce in place of the oil). Put batter in ice cream cones and only fill 2/3 the way. You can cut your ice cream cone box with six holes and put the filled cones in the holes. Then place the box with cones in the microwave on high for approx 2 to 2 and half minutes. Let cones cool. (special tip don't try to cool on paper towel or it will stick to it)
