Make the holidays make a difference

Sunday, October 31, 10:00 am: Remembering All Souls Rev. Jaco B. ten Hove, co-minister
Porter Hall, worship associate This annual service will reflect the many important ways we deal with death and grief as religious people. A time to acknowledge loved ones lost will be included. Please feel free to bring photos of them for a display. The Cedars choir will sing and Trick or Treat for UNICEF will be featured during coffee hour.

Sunday, November 7, 10:00 am: Stress, Reframed Revs. Jaco B. ten Hove, co-minister
Betty Petras, worship associate
We might know all too well how the adverse effects of undue life stress can limit our capacities, if not cause debilitating illness. Less visible, but very helpful new understandings about the larger context of modern stress offer hope even as they challenge us to make deeper connections. Please see below information on the latest gathering of our Fellowship of Transition on November 14.

Sunday, November 14, 10:00 am: Inside the Garden Rev. Barbara W. ten Hove, co-minister
Michael Read, worship associate
The idea of paradise is found in many religions. For most, it is some place we go to. What if were already there? How would we live?
Sunday, November 21, 10:00 am: Stories As Revelation, Part 2: Time is Personified in Us Rev. Jaco B. ten Hove, co-minister
Nancy Philip, worship associate
The unfolding of time is interwoven with our lives in a way that is at once quite personal and stirringly universal. Awarding honorary degrees to our Doctors of Durability (Cedars members over 80) will help us lift up the meaning and elements that enliven our journeys. The Cedars choir will sing.

Sunday, November 28, 10:00 am: The Thankful Community Kim Beyer-Nelson, Director of Religious Education
Beth Rahe Balas, worship associate
An All-Ages service of earth-based thanksgiving for our Cedars community, featuring a beautiful ritual to praise the earth that is our home and a Great Litany of thanksgiving with sung responses, UU-style of course. This morning of meaningful music and prayerful words will help us all touch our lives, separate and in community, with renewed thankfulness. Included will be a Special Collection for our local Boys and Girls Club.

Co-ministers' Office Hours for the Month of November:
Co-ministers Revs. Jaco B. & Barbara W. ten Hove (206-780-0373, ext. 1) E-mail: minister@cedarsuuchurch.org. Its best to arrange ahead for an appointment, although one or both co-ministers expect to be at the church office on most Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday mornings. In emergencies, they can be contacted at home as needed: 206-201-3596. Note: Barbara will be away in Virginia visiting family from November 18 to 30.
The Sustainability Book Group will meet at 7:30 pm on Friday, November 12 at the home of Herb Hethcote and Leslie Marshall. We will discuss Getting A Grip 2: Clarity, Creativity and Courage for the World We Really Want by Frances Moore Lappe (2010). Check out the Green Sanctuary section of the table at the back of Webster Hall to see the collection of books we have already read. Newcomers, as well as suggestions for other books that we might discuss in later months, are always welcome. Please join us. The teakettle is always on; bring snacks to share if you would like. Contact Leslie Marshall or Herb Hethcote for more information.

Reel Religion Film Series Continues with The Mission Saturday, November 20, 7:00 pm
Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, Madison Ave at Winslow Way, Bainbridge Island
This event is free and open to the public; donations are welcome to cover costs of licensing. A brief discussion will follow the screening.
The Mission (1986) is rated PG and concerns a Jesuit missionary (Jeremy Irons) who establishes a church in the hostile jungles of Brazil and then finds his work threatened by greed and political forces among his superiors. Robert De Niro is briefly effective as a callous soldier who kills his own brother and then turns to Irons' character to oversee his penance and conversion to the clergy.
The final showing for the Reel Religion series will be Babette's Feast on December 18.
Co-sponsored by ministers from five local congregations, including Jaco and Barbara ten Hove of Cedars.

Due to the busy-ness of the fall and various peoples schedules, the second annual Cedars Womens retreat will take place in January 2011, date still to be finalized. If you are interested in helping with this wonderful event, please contact Rev. Barbara ten Hove. More details will follow in the December Beacon.
