It’s cold!
Last week we planned out what we could accomplish this week if we showed up this morning with snow on the ground and temperatures too cold for mortaring. And it turns out we have to implement that plan.Jesse and Danny are able to keep cutting fieldstone for step risers while Rick and Fraser are fine tuning the joints in the bluestone patio. Ken is cutting the templates for the curved bluestone step treads. We can keep this up for a couple more days, then after Thanskgiving we are hoping for some warmer weather (not freezing) so we can keep pushing forward on all the stone mortaring.

Rick and I spent a couple days last week renovating the planting plan in the front yard we were working on the week before. Here are images of the final product with the new plants.

Yeah you heard right, Avalon has joined crews together to create a super crew! For the next month our crew is teaming up with Ken’s crew to tackle a large project. Keith, Ken, Jesse and Danny have been at the new job for a few weeks now and have gotten it off to an awesome start. They have been focused on regrading and building some really outstanding looking Pennsylvania field stone walls. Rick, Frasier, Kevinand I will be helping out by installing mortar setblue stone patio and paths. Today welaid out our pattern and began to select out stone. It is always a lotof fun to get on a job with both crews, I’m sure we will have some Avalon feats of strengths and crew stone setting challenges. Well back to work for me. Ken will be posting the next blog and letting you know hows it going.

This week we installed a concrete paver patio in the West Seattle front yard of a client for whom we have done several phases of work on a couple different homes. They bought this home a couple years ago and were interested in creating a space that allowed them to be a part of the community but still have a secure spot for their now toddler and infant to run free.
Here are the before and after photos. This last phase involves the new patio with some granite riser stone steps, along with a new planting and lighting scheme.
We completed the patio on Thursday and moved on to join the other crew on a project in Wallingford. Next week, Rick and I will return to remove many of the existing plants, manipulate the grades of the planting beds to meet the new patio, then finalize the new irrigation layout. Then we will install all the new plants, install the new outdoor lighting, and install the mulch.
The granite risers and the charcoal colored pavers look great with the new house paint and the lush green of the plants.

We have just finished a paver patio & water feature in a small, quiet back yard. By removing an existing concrete patio and replacing it with two levels of patio and a water feature, we transformed a plain backyard into a quaint, usable outdoor space. The crew made a big push to get finished on Thursday and now we’re moving on to our next project. Weather had slowed us down abit but the second half of the week gave us a chance to catch back up. The best part is that the client will have a great landscape to enjoy when the weather returns in the summer!

Feels like awhile since I last checked in. We have been working on a project to add more usable area and decrease maintenance to a small backyard. Our crew removed a small concrete patio andsmall upper and lower lawns. To make less yard work andadd an outdoor room feel,we are replacing those areas with paving. A water feature is also being added to bring a focal point to the yard. We are getting pretty close to the finish and I will be sure to get another update out as soon as we do.

We have completed the small side yard project.
The homeowners had a small sloping side yard that went unused. They wanted to have some vegetable beds, a patio, a fire pit, a grape arbor, perennial beds, a secluded area and screening from the busy street a half block away. They ended up getting it all.
We hadn’t even finished the project before they invited some friends over had sat around the fire.
Gardening and wood working are hobbies of these clients, so the bulk of the planting will be done by the homeowners next spring, along with a decorative gate between the two vegetable planters.

Our vision of the small side yard is manifesting nicely. We opened the front porch up to connect it to a patio with a fire pit. We installed planters to delineate the space from the front yard, and a short wall and steps to access the lower area. There is a lot going on in this small project, with everyday trying to finish up one task and begin another.

This week and next our crew is renovating the side yard of a Madrona home. This unused portion of their home will now get some life breathed into it.
Here’s Jesse removing the overgrown hedge. And Aaron saving the plants that the homeowners want to keep.

And then you see Fraser practicing the hurdles as he traverses the stringline-riddled site while Victor consults the plan. And Rick preparing to demo the surprise concrete pad we uncovered.

By the end of the week we will have the walls, steps and patio in; something more to show than how good we are at making things dirty.

Last week we finished our lawn replacement project on the lake. It was a challenging job trying to squeeze machines into tight spaces and moving them up mucky slopes. We did the bulk of the removal just after the heavy rains the week before last, and had our doubts about our eventual success. But we got it out!
We transplanted the plants to the new veggie beds. We revamped the irrigation system, hauled in the good soil then hydroseeded. Today I stopped by to check the irrigation and saw the little grass seedlings coming up. Pretty exciting.
