1 001 Play. Our best work comes from moments of pure inspiration informed by rigorous study. Neither is worth much without the other. Once all the research is in, once the conditions are analyzed, it's time to play. The more pure and enjoyable this creative process, the better the results. 2 002 Experience. The thrill of the new captivates us all. It's easy to love something bright and shiny, but what happens when novelty fades? Does age make a place richer, or just make it look old? This is where substance does its work. Time divides those who have it from those who don't. 3 003 Home. What gives one a sense of being home? Is it a familiarity with the surroundings, a feeling of belonging? Is it the spaces and the moods of each part of a place that echo in the mind? How do you create this feeling? How do you make a place that is new feel like home? 4 004 Dirt. What's it worth? That's a good question. If you think about it, it really depends on whether you need some, or if you are trying to get rid of it. Ideally, you don't have to do either. It's simply a matter of moving a bit here, and a bit there and coming out even in the end. 5 005 Site. A place, a view, a feeling. The right site makes a good building great. A great building refines the character of a place. We don't always get to pick our sites, so if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with. If we listen carefully, each site tells us what it wants to be. 6 006 Neighborhood. Why are some neighbors friendly while some never even speak to each other? Is it the people, or is it something else altogether? What defines a neighborhood? Is it the street? The houses? The location? Or is it the decisions we collectively make about all these things? 7 007 Light. It creates a space without the use of walls. Its absence is as powerful as its presence. It turns place into experience. Light unlocks the potential of a space by guiding the eye. It is a translator and narrator, telling the story of a place to its inhabitants. 8 008 Between. On the way from here to there, we pass through spaces we often think of as nowhere special. Isn't every place really somewhere? Is any moment we spend less valuable than any other? We spend a lot of our time in between places. Shouldn't we be enjoying it?
