As the summer heats up many people retreat to the cool air conditioned spaces inside while the ground bakes outside. While the sunlight is absolutely necessary to the plants outside it can also bake them to a crisp if there is not sufficient water. Many areas require sprinkler systems to keep their gardens and lawns healthy and green. While a hose is effective with the right nozzle it can waste precious time and easily be forgotten about which can cause over or under watering.
To accurately control irrigation with a lawn sprinkler a sprinkler timer has to be installed. These range in complexity from a timer that merely turns the sprinkler on and off to an automatic sprinkler that has moisture sensors. Timers with moisture sensors do not turn on when it is raining which can save a great deal of water. Some have sensors in the soil and only water when the soil has reached a certain level of dryness. Even then they only water a little bit at a time.
The type of sprinkler heads installed determines how well the home sprinklers will work. Pop-up spray heads give a consistent pattern, usually circular or semi-circular with a radius of 7-15 feet depending on the water pressure. These are typically flush with the ground when not in use so that a lawn mower and other foot traffic is not impeded by them. The plumbing is also underground with water flowing through PVC pipes.
An impact sprinkler head can cover a much larger area and actually helped to revolutionize irrigation techniques for farming. Before this type of irrigation sprinkler which was invented in 1933, crops were water through a process called furrowing where trenches are dug in between crops and then flooded. The impact sprinkler allowed water to fall just like rain over a very large area and made irrigation much less time and labor consuming. These can also be made as pop-up versions with a large sprinkler cover for bigger lawns.
Sprinkler system installation can be contracted out to many professionals but is mechanically simple enough to be done by any semi-skilled homeowner. For a garden sprinkler PVC pipe can often be merely laid on the ground and connected to a water supply with a sprinkler valve. Automatic sprinklers require a little bit more installation time and can be confusing and difficult to program alone but offer more convenience in the future.
Soaking sprinklers are becoming more and more common because they conserve water better then a spray sprinkler. The water is applied directly to the soil or root system which allows it to be absorbed before it can evaporate. A spraying sprinkler can evaporate a third of its water on a hot day before it even hits the ground. The further the water has to go to reach soil the more water that is lost. A slow consistent soaking of the plants roots is great for delicate plants and hearty plants alike although they have not proved to be very useful in watering large swaths of lawn.
