Sonoco Targets a Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Harris E. DeLoach, Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer, announced a voluntary reduction in greenhouse gas emission of 15 percent from the Company's global manufacturing plants by 2014.
"I am pleased to report that our efforts in 2009 led to an approximate 13 percent reduction," DeLoach said. "We have put in place a global Web-based environmental management system which collects GHG emissions from all of our international manufacturing facilities. We have taken this data, established 2008 as our baseline year, and set a goal of reducing GHG emission from our more than 300 manufacturing facilities by 15 percent by 2014."
Sonoco again chosen to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
For the second year in a row Sonoco has been selected to join the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). DJSI World comprises the leading global companies in terms of economic performance, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes are determined following an annual review by SAM, an investment boutique focused on sustainability investing, together with Dow Jones Indexes.
Acquisition makes Sonoco a leader in frozen food packaging
Sonoco became a leader in the frozen, chilled and ready-to-eat food markets and significantly expanded its thermoforming plastic container capabilities with June's acquisition of Associated Packaging Technologies.
Founded in 1993, APT is North America's largest manufacturer and supplier of dual-ovenable, crystallized polyethylene terepthalate (CPET) containers to the frozen food industry in North America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand.
Sonoco Recycling completes third material recovery facility
A $4.6 million expansion was recently completed at Sonoco Recycling's facility in Charlotte making it one of the most technologically advanced recycling facilities in the United States and the third material recovery facility (MRF) owned and operated by the company. The 62,000 square-foot facility, which now has 43 conveyors and six screens to automatically sort cardboard, newspaper, plastics and aluminum, is capable of processing up to 400 tons of material.
