"Helping you achieve the landscape you want through creative design and consultation."
About Barbara Schmidt
As a designer I respect and strive to preserve the natural attributes of our gardens. I plan landscape gardens to work with, rather than against nature. Harmony between the natural and man-made elements of our environments makes the most natural landscape garden.
* I have over 30 years of hands on experience in horticulture and landscape design.
* Self-employed and serving contractors and homeowners in the Puget Sound area since 1978.
* Associates degree in horticulture and landscape design from South Seattle Community College.
* Washington State Certified Landscaper and Nursery Professional (Lifetime Certification).
* Graduate of the Master Gardeners Program.
I have many design/build projects to my credit that I am very proud of. References are available.
What is Landscape Design?
A landscape design is a garden tool. It is a tool to eliminate the typical mistakes made in an unplanned garden. Mistakes can be both costly and time consuming to correct. The design and horticulture problems of a new garden should be solved before difficult soil work begins.
How is the design developed?
A landscape design is developed by understanding how the garden will be used.
I recognize that you and your property have unique needs and you may already have a tentative image of what a landscape garden should be. That image may be a very private garden for retreat and relaxation or a barbecue pit and a sport court to entertain family and friends.
You may envision your property as a wildlife refuge with meadows, woods and wetlands or as a bountiful garden yielding fruits vegetables and cut flowers throughout the year.
If your property is large enough it may be possible to have all of the above.
My goal is to define your needs and then translate them into a workable landscape design for you.
A successful landscape design is achieved through a flexible and creative design process.
As your landscape designer I will help you choose the landscape procedures best suited to your needs.
You may require a blueprint design with plant and material list which may be handed to a landscape contractor for bids and estimates. Or, we may begin on an hourly consultation basis with directions and instructions that will allow you to be as self-reliant as you choose to be.
I will recommend responsible landscape contractors, find the best topsoil and the right tractor-tiller man. If you need me I will follow through to the final mulching. In short, I will participate at whatever level you and your landscape garden require.
As an independent business person I can freely be your ally and advocate, helping you achieve the landscape garden you want through creative design and consultation.
Design & Consultation Services
The services I provide are:
Affordable Landscape Consultation with a ‘Twist’
* Solving landscape design and horticulture problems at your home on an hourly basis.
* The ‘twist’ …… Before consultation I’ll ask you to prepare a plot map of your property.
* I’ll send you easy instructions on how to prepare the plot map.
* When we meet at your home, we’ll begin by walking your property, exchanging ideas, solving problems. This is your garden not mine, so I will listen carefully to your ideas.
* After our walk around we’ll go into your home and sit down together with your plot map. I’ll put tracing paper over the map and apply-draw the ideas we have generated outside.
* Working together, proofing my work with you by my side, approximately 3 to 6 hours total, you will have an affordable pencil drawn landscape design showing bed lines, hard surfaces, trees and shrubs. A design that you may install yourself or give to contractors for estimates and bids, an affordable personal way to achieve the landscape you want.
Landscape Design Process
* After an initial garden consultation I will give an estimate of the cost of a landscape design.
* The actual design begins with measuring and evaluation of the site.
* Consultation with the client is essential as the design progresses.
* At the half way point in the design process a rough draft and preliminary plant list are presented for review and revision and a revaluation of cost of the finished design is discussed.
* Upon completion of a landscape design, the client is presented with three detailed scaled CAD {Computer Aided Design} drawings. A plant list with botanical and common names, quantities and sizes of trees, shrubs, and hard surfaces are specified in the design.
