The internet has been infiltrated with predatory locksmiths claiming to be locally based. These con artists are using every trick in the book to "rip off" their unsuspecting customers. More and more, we are hearing shocking stories from people about bumped up prices, shoddy work, no shows after long wait times, and strong arm tactics. I even received a call from a bogus roadside service. The corporate credit card number used to pay me, turned out to be the customer's card number, and he had already been overcharged!!! Even scarier, at least three local locksmith's vans have been broken into by professional thieves, and their contents emptied. The police believe an out of state ring is to blame, their mission being to set up people, locally, posing as locksmiths. How can you protect yourself??? People like internet searches because they are convenient. If you have time, see if a locksmith also advertises in your local phone book. Most fly by night companies will not pay the high cost of print ads. Some locksmiths have storefronts, and some are just mobile. What is their business address? Ask them to call you back. Do they display a local prefix on the incoming call? Hopefully this message will protect, and help educate you about some of the challenges facing our industry in todays marketplace.
