Have you ever wondered about the purpose of dental X-rays? Also known as radiographs, these examinations can detect bone infections, abscesses, cysts, gum disease, tumors, and decay in hard-to-spot areas.
Early detection through radiographing is one of dentistry's most useful tools, saving you discomfort, time, and expense by catching issues before they worsen. In certain situations, quicker intervention can even save lives.
Here's how they work. The X-rays are absorbed more in the dense parts of the mouth such as the bones and teeth. They appear lighter on the film. But decay, infection, and certain other signs of trouble show up darker because of greater X-ray penetration in those areas. Introduced materials such as fillings and crowns appear either lighter or darker depending on the material that was used.
Dentists compare patient radiographs over time and can see oral changes as they occur. In many cases, changes are evident on film before they can be detected visually and before they begin to cause problems for a patient. Deeper issues relating to the bones and ligaments that hold teeth in place can also be monitored more effectively.
Frequency of radiographs depends on the individual. Some patients request to have their existing files transferred from their previous clinics. New patients may need a radiograph to establish a baseline for ongoing care.
