October 22, 2010 - How Quickly Can You Bag Groceries?A local man found out and won $1000 in a statewide grocery-bagging contest put on by the Washington Food Industry Association. Sean Dorsey 19, a Ralph's Thriftway employee showed he could bag the most groceries in paper and reusable bags. He fell short of the first $1500 when he missed a stick of gun hiding under a bag. Winners can advance to a national bagoff in Las Vegas to compete for $10,000! All contestants got to take home at least $100 for playing and markets from all over the area participated. October 12, 2010 - Tumwater Marching Band FesivalBands from all over the state poured into the Tumwater District Stadium for a soggy but musical festival on Sat, October 9th. Black Hills High School took first place in the AA Division.
October 5, 2010 - Vocational skills students explore aquacultureRacing against the incoming tide, students from New Market Vocational Skills Center in Tumwater hustled Monday morning to measure and place tiny seed oysters into three growing containers on a beach near Johnson Point. For the young people, it was a fresh air lesson on the ecology and economics of South Puget Sound aquaculture. "What we're hoping to do here is frame outdoor science to show that science is so much more than boiling water in the classroom," New Market environmental educator Craig Baker said as he took a quick break from barking instructions to the 30 students who first harvested and measured oysters grown by classmates last year before planting the crop they will monitor this year.
September 27, 2010 - New Park Envisioned for Olympia
By next summer, Olympians will be enjoying a new, 4.8-acre park off Henderson Boulevard near Yelm Highway. Phase 1 which is scheduled to be complete May 15, will include an irrigated grass playfield, a little larger than a football or soccer field, Summers said. A tennis court, paved trails, swings, landscaping, restrooms and a parking lot round out the park.
Phase 2, which has not been scheduled, will include a basketball court, a shelter and playground improvements. One nice feature of this neighborhood park is that the pedestrian trails that are in the park are also interconnected into the large trail system that serves the whole Briggs Village area.
