Aishinkai (formerly Tsubomi Seishin Kan Bannister Dojo and Aikido Kokikai Seattle) is one of the oldest martial arts communities in the Seattle area. Founded in 1990 by headmaster Dr. Jonathan Bannister (honorary Ph.D./Ma.D.Sc.), Aishin-Ryu Aikido shihan and ZNKR Iaido yondan, our organization has graduated more than 75 black belts, shared our understanding and appreciation of Japanese martial arts culture with thousands of adults and children, and contributed enormously to the growth and development of high-quality, low-cost training in our community. Our goal is to share the wonders of Japanese martial and cultural arts and a new vision of martial arts as a means to create one human family. Whether you wish to study Mind and Body Coordination, Aikido self-defense, or Iaido quick-draw swordsmanship, at Aishinkai you'll discover the finest martial arts and a worthwhile social calling. There has never been a more important time for martial artists to share their clarity of vision, ethical foundation, and decisiveness with our society. We have a lot to offer, and a lot of fun developing ourselves to meet this challenge.
To express in art, thought, and action a new paradigm of harmonious cooperation, peaceful conflict resolution, and global citizenship in which personal empowerment
need never come at another's expense. In keeping with the great social mission of Budo martial arts, we train to become great martial artists, as well as social and civic leaders. We seek to put our knowledge and strength to work for the betterment of our community, our nation, and our fellow citizens.

Aikido A Gentle Art of Self-Defense is the most modern martial art of Japan, and the Aishinkai offers a very modern expression of this beautiful and remarkably effective art. Aishinkai Aikido illuminates the fallacy of violence as a legitimate means to resolve conflict. Aikido training fosters mind-body coordination through the study of non-violent throws and pins that compromise an opponent's posture and balance without inflicting injury. Aikido is highly effective against simultaneous multiple attacks. Aishinkai Aikido practitioners fully accept responsibility for protecting attackers from the self-destructive consequences of aggression. The Aishinkai is an independent organization committed to a new and unique expression of Aikido, " The Way of Spiritual Harmony." Practices are light-hearted and suitable for all, regardless of gender, age, or experience. Please see our Aikido Adults & Children page for more information about on-going classes.
Iaido Japanese Swordsmanship Japan's sword arts combine profound spiritual, technical and strategic content in beautiful forms that reveal profound insights into the nature of conflict. Swords are endlessly fun, and the study of Iaido fosters calm self-confidence, mental agility, and character development. Aishinkai is an authorized branch of the Pacific Northwest Kendo Federation. Qualified instruction is offered in All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido, Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido, Aiki-ken and Aiki-Jo. Interested in Japan? Experience traditional martial arts culture by joining our friendly community club. Please see our Iaido: Japanese Sword page for information about training available for ages 12+.
Aiki-ken/Aiki-jo Weapons arts that apply Aikido's profound philosophy of non-violence to the use of traditional sword and staff. This special training is considered so integral to our teaching method and philosophy that it is made available to all dojo members. Forms and partner fencing reveal methods to preserve one's own integrity and safety without inflicting injury to others. Please see our Aikido for Adults & Children page for more information about Aiki-weapons training available to all ages.
Ki Development is integral to martial arts studies, and our students are encouraged to augment their practice with special Ki Development Exercises, Ki meditation, Ki Breathing, and Kiatsu Ryoho massage. These tools promote spiritual forging and good health, and offer insight into the rich pageant of traditional Japanese Budo culture. Please see our Aikido and Iaido pages for more information.
A Complete Martial and Cultural Arts Education Instruction is available in the expressive artistic pursuits of Bonsai tree potting, Shodo brush calligraphy, and Ikebana flower arranging, all of which foster a deep appreciation for Nature and our place in it. Bannister Sensei was encouraged by his teachers to emulate classical Budo education of the past by mastering one art (he first selected Aikido) and being well-versed in at least six others. Our students are invited to experience other arts in order to broaden and complete their Budo education. Please see our Bonsai Shodo Ikebana page for additional information.
