Help Our Church Family Develop - The Barnabas Culture
What is that? - 'Barnabas', which means 'son of encouragement', is the name of St. Paul's traveling companion during his missionary journeys as recorded in Acts in the New Testament. Barnabas truly lived up to the meaning of his name. He went about building up people. He advocated for others. He was an affirmer, supporter, and relentless encourager. Read about him in the book of Acts as well as the additional insightful comments in Acts of the Apostles by Ellen White as referenced below.
What can I do? - Once you've read up about Barnabas and become inspired to become an encourager like him, resolve to put your inspiration into action. Pray and talk to your family and friends about it. Think of someone you can reach out to with a Barnabas-like spirit whom you know is facing tough times. Listen, pray with, and offer words of encouragement. If you are dealing with a difficult situation yourself, don't hesitate to find someone you trust to talk and pray with. The Barnabas culture is really about all of us coming alongside each other in genuine and sincere ways to help each other carry the burdens and challenges of modern day living.
Be creative - Our church elders are calling us to pursue the development of the Barnabas Culture in our congregation over the next twelve months. They urge everyone to become creative in building and spreading this culture around -- in and from our homes, schools, Bible study and fellowship groups, at private and church fellowship meals, Sabbath School classes, sermons--the sky is the limit! Please plan to participate in a special 'Barnabas Culture Emphasis' weekend on October 8-9. More details will be provided later.
