We have compiled this information to inform you and help you make the best decision regarding your new fence purchase. Remember, the contractor with the lowest price may not be the best bargain in the long run. Be sure of your contractor and his/her product. You will certainly save more money and be happier with the product after the work is complete.
DETERMINE YOUR FENCING NEEDS, AND WHAT FUNCTIONS YOU WANT YOUR FENCE TO PERFORM.
With wise planning, your fence can provide one or more of these functions. Look for a contractor who can combine your needs with the aesthetics you desire, a selection personally satisfying to you, the consumer.
Chain link fence materials come in galvanized steel, or vinyl coated steel.
Wood Privacy or Decorative fences can be constructed from several types and grades of lumber. Cedar is the material of choice for the Northwest climate.
Ornamental Fences can be constructed of aluminum or wrought iron.
Vinyl Fences are often used around pastures, and can be used in decorative situations as well.
Be certain your written contract contains the specifications of the materials that your contractor intends to use. If lumber is to be used, your contract should specify the type, grade, and dimension of wood. While clear cedar is the most beautiful, it might not be worth the cost to you. We usually specify "Tight Knot" cedar fence boards. If a chain link fence is your selection, the gauge of fabric and size of posts should be specified. Also, the number and size of gates, maximum spacing of posts, and whether the posts will be set in concrete, should be specified.
Notice Advertising. Unbelievable discounts are just that . . . UNBELIEVABLE! Read the small print. You may get a discount on the material, but then find yourself paying an inflated price for labor and other necessary items. Without profits, a business cannot continue to operate . . . a reputable contractor deserves a reasonable profit. . . without it, he cannot remain reputable, or stay in business.
Check References. Ask the contractor for references. Be sure to check them out. Also, look at fences built in your area. Most contractors attach small identifying signs to the fences they build indicating pride in workmanship. How long has the contractor been in business at the present location? Ask if the installers are employees or if the contractor hires independent crews to do the work. The use of employees usually leads to better quality control.
Make Sure Your Contractor Is Licensed and Insured. Ask to see a copy of his insurance coverage. A reputable contractor will be happy to provide a copy. The contractor's workman's compensation and liability insurance protect you if one of his employees is injured on your property. Ask also to see a copy of the contractors state license and check with the state registration office to verify the contractor's good standing.
Know Your Rights and Obligations. Ask questions! Who clears the property line for the fence installation? Who cleans up afterwards? Who is responsible for location of property lines?
